Sign the petition for reform in the Montco Dems ASAP
Petition begun by Montgomery County Democratic Committee People
Hi! A petition has been established toward the goal of reform of the way the Montco Dems endorse candidates. You can view and sign the petition here to show the Montco Dems’ Executive Committee that we want reform of the opaque process of their recommendations for endorsements that led to the pay-to-play scandal. (See this post for details about the scandal.)
The Primary election saw local Democratic Committee People like me in the awkward position of being required by Montco Democrats’ bylaws to recommend the endorsed candidate for Montgomery County Commissioner, Jamila Winder, to voters by passing out those yellow sheets with her name on them at the polling place, even though she had been implicated in a pay-to-play scandal by The Inquirer just a few days before the Primary. With the Party’s endorsement, combined with Winder’s favorable ballot position, she won the Party’s nomination for Montco Commissioner in November. (Winder was listed first on the ballot, which is established by candidates’ drawing straws at the Voter Services office in Norristown in March.)
The petition seeks changes in the way that candidates are endorsed by the Party. Instead of the Montco Dems’ Executive Committee recommending a handful of hand-picked candidates to Committee People, who vote to endorse at a Nominating Convention in February, Committee People want to play an active role in endorsing candidates rather than be a rubber stamp for the Executive Committee.
Voters are welcome to sign the petition! As a registered Democrat, you are really a member of the Party, not just a passive observer as the media would lead you to believe. We want your signature to reflect the will of the people that the Montco Democratic Executive Committee take its thumb off the scales when endorsing candidates for the Primary - which can, and did, lead to ripe conditions for a pay-to-play scandal.
Thanks so much for your signature! It means a lot as a show of concern among citizens. That link again for the petition is here. - Faith
